In its time

Telegram became where millions met crypto first.

By the summer of 2024 tap games had brought tens of millions of people on Telegram to their first token. Most had never used an exchange. Blum was built for the step after the game: the first trade.

The bet

An exchange for people who had never traded.

Most people who opened Blum had never placed a trade, and Telegram was where they already were. So Blum put the exchange inside Telegram: tokens from centralised and decentralised markets in one list, trades from the wallet people already had, and no chain to choose.

The first screen does what a trading app usually leaves for later: a watchlist and what is moving today, before any account. Creating one is a single button above the market, not a wall in front of it.

Blum Memepad: a spotlight on the token closest to listing with its progress bar, a live buy notice, and lists of new, hot, Bluming and listed tokens.

Memepad

Token launches you can follow.

Memepad brought launches into the same app. A spotlight on the token closest to listing, a live line of who just bought what, and four stages anyone can read: Fresh, Hot, Bluming, Blumed. When a token is Blumed it moves to a public exchange, and the app says so in one screen, with the one action left to take.

Blum announced Memepad in November 2024. I designed it with the team, from the list to the launch flow and the trade.

  1. Memepad: the token closest to listing in the spotlight, then the list of fresh tokens with holders and market cap.

    1 · Fresh

  2. Bluming: a four-leaf clover with the token’s face, and the line PEIPEI is fully moving to STON.fi; this may take a few minutes.

    2 · Bluming

  3. PEIPEI is Blumed: the token is on STON.fi, with one button, Unlock PEIPEI.

    3 · Blumed

  4. The token page: market cap, holders, volume and a price chart, with Buy and Sell.

    4 · The token

  5. Buying 1.3 TON of PEIPEI, with the slippage set and one button, Buy PEIPEI.

    5 · Buy in TON

  6. Back on the token page with a confirmation: You’ve got 0.3 TON of PEIPEI.

    6 · Bought

From listing to trade in six screens: the list, the move to the exchange, the one action left, then a purchase in TON. Cut from the Blum working file, 2024 · sample tokens and figures. Later releases renamed the stages New, Hot, Bluming and Listed.

The way in

Something to do before anything to learn.

Blum still had to bring people to the first trade. The way in was a loop: farm points, play a thirty-second drop game, keep a daily streak, invite friends. Each step introduced something trading would later rely on: a balance that grows, a timer, a reward you claim.

The game is three rules. Catch the falling clovers; a freeze stops the clock for three seconds; a bomb costs points and flashes the screen red. The working file specifies every state, the haptics and how the score counts up, so engineers could build it exactly.

The drop game: falling clovers on a grid, a timer at 29 seconds and the score.

The drop game, thirty seconds in four states. Blum mini app working file, 2024.

Blum’s drop game launch film: Introducing, then BLUM DROP GAME in lime neon over a phone playing it, Just get Blum points while playing!, It’s easy!, and the pixel B with the name. Eighteen seconds, no sound.
Blum’s five million film: glowing icons roll into the number 5,000,000, then a phone with a Blum profile under the words 5,000,000 Blum users, and Thank you!. Sixteen seconds, no sound.
Blum’s ten million film: the pixel B breaks into Blum’s icon set, the icons fill a grid, and 10,000,000 scrolls over pixel fire before two phones read Blum users. Sixteen seconds, no sound.
Blum’s twenty million film: counters jump from 10 to 18, then a chrome 20 turns in a lime grid tunnel under the words 20 million Blum users, and Thank you!. Twelve seconds, no sound.

Blum’s own films from 2024: the drop game launch, then five, ten and twenty million users.

The takeover

Hacked, on purpose.

On 4 July 2024 the calligraffiti artist Pokras Lampas posted that he had hacked Blum. It was a collaboration. The app wore his hand: magenta calligraffiti over the home screen, a drop game of chrome flowers, hearts and stars, a reward with a chrome thumbs-up, and a system dialog that reads Hacked by Pokras Lampas.

Everything stayed in the hacker’s voice, down to a to-do list with “Get hacked by Pokras” at number four and a poster of demands: complete new tasks in the game, follow the artist, share his work.

  1. The hacked home screen: a balance of 0.001 with Drop game scrawled under it in magenta calligraffiti, PLAY? sprayed across the game card, and Start farming.

  2. The drop game intro, taken over: a chrome snowflake, magenta scrawls, and a grey system dialog, Blum: All Crypto – One App, Hacked by Pokras Lampas, with OK.

    Hacked

  3. The drop game in play: chrome flowers, hearts, stars and snowflakes falling over magenta letters, a timer at 24 seconds and 120 points.

    Play

  4. The reward: You nailed it! Total legend!, 120 points, a chrome thumbs-up and a sprayed smiley, BLUM in dripping magenta, Share and Claim.

The kit: calligraffiti, chrome objects, dialogs, a to-do list and the demands. Blum × Pokras Lampas working file, 2024.

The exchange

From farming points to perps, one order at a time.

Blum grew from a points app into an exchange: spot trading and Memepad launches on TON, then the Terminal across Solana and BNB Chain, then perpetual futures in September 2025.

Perps is where a design can hurt people, so the order slows down where it should. Leverage shows the margin it puts at risk before you commit; anything high comes with a plain warning that it raises the risk of liquidation and that newer traders should go lower. Orders end on a confirmation with type, margin, leverage, size and liquidation price, which an experienced trader can switch off.

The Exchange Kit holds 108 designed states for placing a perps order, on mobile and desktop, and the Wallet Kit puts four wallets behind one hub: spot, perps, points and a connected wallet.

Trading perpetual contracts is risky — you may lose all your margin. You trade at your own risk.

One brand, seven products

A pixel, a B, and a rule for every product.

Blum’s mark is a B built from pixels, with a line through it like a currency sign. One rule carries it to every product, white on black: the products people open carry the mark with their name below it; the spot exchange, the two developer kits and the design system carry the name alone.

Seven products, one family, readable at a glance in a Telegram chat list, which is where most people met them. Adding an eighth needs no new design, only the rule.

Brand OS · 2025

A quieter brand, piloted inside the app.

Brand OS was a pilot for a second register: calm and future-neutral, for the moments inside the app. Light sources, shadow and atmosphere instead of coins and charts. Minimal copy, soft shadows, velvet blacks, sand and rose neutrals.

It came as rules, not moodboards. A story cover gets one hero image, a title of two words at most, one short line and one action, and no busy collages, meme sprites or stock-icon mashups. A big launch gets a looped spotlight of four to six seconds; a concept gets two or three slides: what it is, how it works, what to do.

Success was written down as measures: quiz completion, time to first action and share taps on the refreshed surfaces, and a usability score before and after.

The system

Three designers, one system.

Three designers and I covered the mini app, the brand, Memepad and the exchange. That was only possible because everything came from one system: BDS, with kits for the exchange and the wallet, one set of components, type and rules across every surface.

I worked with engineers on trading, Memepad, the Terminal and perpetual futures. The Terminal put TON, Solana and BNB Chain in one list in July 2025; perpetual futures followed in September. I left Blum in March 2026.
